The US has millions of citizens in prison every day...that's right ..millions. In fact we have more prisoners than any other country on Earth. States are struggling with severe prison overcrowding at almost every level, yet politicians and the public continue to push incarceration as the main deterrent to crime. Further, no-one in America has any expectation that prisons rehabilitate. Indeed the brutality of the prison experience in America seems well comprehended by everyone while the roots causes for the American Prison State are poorly understood.

Joining us today and again next week is author Sasha Ambramsky , his newest book is American Furies, Crime Punishment and Vengeance in the Age of Imprisonment. He offers some surprising insights into the broader impact of having so many prisoners on our entire national culture.

Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday of the year, hands down. Around no other broad societal celebration can adults completely go crazy decorating the front yard, wear costumes to the supermarket or eat all the candy we want. Notice I said adults, but I think my 4 year old daughter and the children of America have fun doing those things too.

In our lead up to Halloween here on AVR we're going to cover an essential part of the holiday and that is pumpkin carving. But today we're not going to talk about the average size pumpkins of which we will all have our hands sunk into the slimy pulp very soon, but really big pumpkins. Monster pumpkins in fact.

Clarence Page
Clarence is a columnist at the Chicago Tribune and a political commentator who appears frequently on television talk shows. Chris and Clarence discuss the racial disparities of marijuana prohibition. They also explore the broader issue in, at times, a very personal discussion of racism in America.
For centuries twisted religious and moral beliefs spawned the industrial abuse of fellow human beings. This system was so entrenched into the ideals of this country that 140 years since the end of the Civil War, our history of slavery still has an underlying hand in shaping our foreign and domestic polices. Many may think that the Union Victory of the Civil War ended the slave trade for White Southerners, but a new book shines a light on a forgotten portion of history that had Americans continuing to traffic in kidnapped human beings long after Appomattox Courthouse.
Penny Coleman joins us to discuss her new book Flashback: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Suicide and the Lessons of War.

More and more Americans are deployed overseas for extended, multiple tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan ...but what happens when the tours are over and the troops return home?  Flashback is a personal work by Penny and a vitally important book that can help us all help our Soldiers.

PART ONE  and PART TWO of
Active Voice Radio continues  to delve into a topic that has historical resonance and great importance in the present political reality of America: The FBIs infiltration of different civil groups. During the 1960's and 1970's the FBI ran surveillance on or gained access to dozens of groups and kept files on numerous individuals...even John Lennon. But perhaps the deepest and most deadly infiltration occurred within AIM or the American Indian Movement. Today we are finding out that even peaceful anti-war groups like a Quaker meeting in Florida have come under the close scrutiny of our most powerful domestic agency.
Joining us is Steve Hendricks. Steve is a freelance investigative journalist who has written for the San Francisco Chronicle, the Nation, the Boston Globe and the Seattle Times. He spent four years in Montana researching his newest book, The Unquiet Grave: The FBI and the Struggle for the Soul of Indian Country. The book is a hard examination of the practices and policies used by both AIM and the FBI during a time when America's Native People were finding their voice and regaining a place in modern American society.
