On April 20th 2009 the NORML Freedom Forum was held at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Speakers on the topic of ending marijuana prohibition spoke at the Kirby Auditorium.
New Jersey has active legislation that would create a state authorized therapeutic cannabis program. The New Jersey Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act, A804, will be heard soon by the Assembly Health Committee. The bill's Senate version passed in February. A804 only needs the full Assembly vote to become law, since Governor Corzine has said he would sign when the bill reaches his desk.
Charles Kwiatkowski testified before the NJ Senate Health Committee hearings in Deceber 2008. His testimony, recounted in this talk, had a moving impact on legislators.
Gerogine DiMaria offers is a seasoned health advocate and this speech was her debut on the cause of medial marijuana. He poise and passion are evident in the talk.

Congressmen Barney Frank (D-MA) and Ron Paul (R-TX) interviewed by Chris Goldstein for Active Voice Radio on 4-2-09 about medical marijuana, decriminalization and President Obama's recent comments on legalization.
Rep. Frank congratulated the people of his home state for decriminalizing marijuana possession in a ballot referendum this fall. He also discussed the economic crisis and offered a welcome bit of levity.
Rep. Paul noted that he does not see marijuana legalization as a tax issue, since he is anti-tax anyway, but sees the topic is a state's rights and privacy issue. Congressman Paul also noted his own rather conservative district voters in Texas have never penalized him for his pro-reform positions.

Goldstein addresses the issues of modern parenting with Weissbourd and asks:
- What matters more the quality of parenting or who is doing it?
- How do parents morally regress?
- What are the signs parents should look for to guide them in better parenting on morality?
Richard Weissbourd is a child and family psychologist on the faculty of Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and School of Education. He is the author of The Vulnerable Child, recently named by the American School board Journal as one of the top ten education books of all time

President Obama officially nominated a new Drug Czar today. Former Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske may represent a sea-change for the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, if his nomination is approved by Congress.
A recent review of the ONDCP ordered by Congress from the National Academy of Public Administration found many shortcomings.
Among their findings:
- ONDCP has focused too heavily on marijuana
- ONDCP has failed to produce comprehensive financial overviews of prohibition policy and enforcement for the President and Congress.
My blog on that report here:
Also in the program, an interview with former police detective Howard Wooldridge who has been involved with the group Law Enforcement Against Prohibition or L.E.A.P. Howard discusses the change inatttiude toward prohibition reform he has encountered recently in Washington DC. The Philly Mummers:A Wild Tradition Keeps Strutting
To start off the 2009 radio season I decided to explore one of the largest and perhaps one of the strangest city traditions in the country. In Philadelphia Pennsylvania, every year on New Years day, thousands of blue collar men - in a tradition stretching back over 100 years - take off their work-boots, set aside their labor and pick up banjos, saxophones and other instruments...these burly family men, put on intricate costumes lavishly decorated with bright sequins, feathers, glitter.... then they march.... in groups of 18- to over 60... they parade up Broad St from the Stadium area in South Philly, up more than 2 miles to City Hall ... all the while playing music and performing their own signature struts...it's called The Mummers Parade.
But this iconic Philadelphia tradition almost didn't happen this year. In Part 1 this week on AVR we hear the voices of Dennis Quaile and his younger brother Chris, both hail from a Mummers family. Dennis is now one of the most sought after professional choreographers for the parade. He has seen many, many 1st place prizes for his work and has sent thousands of Mummers up Broad St. including 6 clubs in 2009.
I went looking for a little piece about a crazy parade....but I found a deeper story of working families keeping up their traditions and spirits in tough economic times.
See Photos of the 2009 Mummers from Dan Nowakowski

This week we present the story of a groundbreaking discovery in Art of an unknown master painter and perhaps one of the greatest women painters.
Johannes Vermeer is recognized as one of the greatest painting masters, yet like his Dutch contemporary Rembrandt, struggled financially during his life.
Vermeer's eldest daughter Maria was the model for Girl with the Pearl Earring, which has become a modern icon. Maria is also likely the model in Girl with a Red Hat which hangs in the National Gallery in Washington DC. Chris Goldstein speaks with Art History Professor Benjamin Binstock about his newly released book Vermeer's Family Secrets: Genius, Discovery, and the Unknown Apprentice.
What Professor Binstock argues in his book is that Girl with a Red Hat may be Maria's portrait, by her own hand. Maria appears to have been secretly apprenticed in painting by her genius father. Johannes fostered Maria's talent until, Binstock argues, she was able to forge her father's works as a means to pay the family's debts.
Professor Binstock's book may have a lasting impact on the Art world, at the same time presenting this fascinating discovery of Maria Vermeer. It is a story of artists struggling financially, families showing genius, innovation and creativity to survive. It also shows that those struggles can produce some of the greatest art in the world.
Chris Goldstein interviewed Benjamin Binstock on December 11'th 2008
Also included in the program this week is a special FUNNY Christmas song from lounge-master Richard Cheese.
Enjoy!

The US has millions of citizens in prison every day...that's right ..millions. In fact we have more prisoners than any other country on Earth. States are struggling with severe prison overcrowding at almost every level, yet politicians and the public continue to push incarceration as the main deterrent to crime. Further, no-one in America has any expectation that prisons rehabilitate. Indeed the brutality of the prison experience in America seems well comprehended by everyone while the roots causes for the American Prison State are poorly understood.

Tim Pate
Master Giant Pumpkin Carver
Joining us today is artist, sculptor, musician and master giant pumpkin carver Tim Pate, He'll be flying out this weekend to carve into some of the biggest pumpkins produced around the country. He joins us by phone tonight from his home in Portland Oregon.
Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday of the year, hands down. Around no other broad societal celebration can adults completely go crazy decorating the front yard, wear costumes to the supermarket or eat all the candy we want. Notice I said adults, but I think my 4 year old daughter and the children of America have fun doing those things too.
In our lead up to Halloween here on AVR we're going to cover an essential part of the holiday and that is pumpkin carving. But today we're not going to talk about the average size pumpkins of which we will all have our hands sunk into the slimy pulp very soon, but really big pumpkins. Monster pumpkins in fact.
Also some Peeper Radio Theatre, music from Matata and a wonderful duet by Dar Williams and Ani diFranco.

For centuries twisted religious and moral beliefs spawned the industrial abuse of fellow human beings. This system was so entrenched into the ideals of this country that 140 years since the end of the Civil War, our history of slavery still has an underlying hand in shaping our foreign and domestic polices. Many may think that the Union Victory of the Civil War ended the slave trade for White Southerners, but a new book shines a light on a forgotten portion of history that had Americans continuing to traffic in kidnapped human beings long after Appomattox Courthouse.

PART ONE and PART TWO of
Active Voice Radio continues to delve into a topic that has historical resonance and great importance in the present political reality of America: The FBIs infiltration of different civil groups. During the 1960's and 1970's the FBI ran surveillance on or gained access to dozens of groups and kept files on numerous individuals...even John Lennon. But perhaps the deepest and most deadly infiltration occurred within AIM or the American Indian Movement. Today we are finding out that even peaceful anti-war groups like a Quaker meeting in Florida have come under the close scrutiny of our most powerful domestic agency.
Joining us is Steve Hendricks. Steve is a freelance investigative journalist who has written for the San Francisco Chronicle, the Nation, the Boston Globe and the Seattle Times. He spent four years in Montana researching his newest book, The Unquiet Grave: The FBI and the Struggle for the Soul of Indian Country. The book is a hard examination of the practices and policies used by both AIM and the FBI during a time when America's Native People were finding their voice and regaining a place in modern American society.

LISTEN TO THE INTERVIEW NOW!
The Podcast of MySpace Musicians hearkens to what radio used to be in it's golden age... when DJs were audiophiles who sought out new, impressive talent. Tyler does a spectacular job of selecting 10-11 new bands each week to showcase in his podcast. ALL of the bands have their work posted on the free site MySpace.com and ALL are unsigned musicians. In many cases this is their first "airplay." Tyler also offers these up-and-coming artists priceless encouragement and constructive criticism. It's not an easy job to seek out new music and find the truly good stuff!
